Why is RAM getting so expensive?

    • The AI Arms Race: Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Gemini require massive amounts of high-speed memory for both training and inference. AI companies are using their massive capital to outbid consumer brands for the limited global supply.
    • The “Big Three” Dominance: Functionally all DRAM chips are made by just three companies: Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. Micron has recently pivoted away from the consumer market (sunsetting its Crucial line) to focus on more lucrative AI data center demand.
    • Supply is Booked Solid: SK Hynix has reportedly sold out its production capacity through 2026. This means even if the “AI bubble” pops today, prices will remain high because the chips for the next two years are already sold at current peak prices.

Why can’t they just build more factories?

    • Inflexible Production: Semiconductor fabrication is a delicate, 24/7 process. Manufacturers can’t simply “turn up” production without risking entire batches of silicon.
    • Risk of Overstock: In the past, makers ramped up production for mobile demand only to be left with an oversupply that crashed prices. Manufacturers are now wary of over-investing in a potential “AI bubble.”
    • Extreme Lead Times: Building a new fabrication plant takes years and billions of dollars in infrastructure (water, power, and specialized construction), making it an impractical short-term solution.
      Is there any hope?
    • New Competition: A Chinese firm, CXMT, has started manufacturing DDR5 chips. While this could eventually increase global supply, they are still years behind the “Big Three” in terms of volume, and trade tensions may limit their impact on Western markets.
    • Consumer Impact: The price hike won’t just hit PC builders; it will eventually affect everything with memory, including smartphones, laptops, smartwatches, and even cars.
