1. Install Speech Note & GPU Acceleration
Open your terminal and run the following Flatpak commands:
Install the Main App: $ flatpak install flathub net.mkiol.SpeechNote
Install NVIDIA Acceleration: $ flatpak install flathub net.mkiol.SpeechNote.Addon.nvidia
2. Download a Local Neural Voice
Piper is built directly into Speech Note, so you only need to download a voice model file inside the app.
- Launch Speech Note via your application menu or terminal:
$ flatpak run net.mkiol.SpeechNote
- Click the Languages / Globe Icon in the top navigation bar.
- Select English (or your preferred language).
- Scroll down to the Text to Speech (TTS) section.
- Choose a high-quality female Piper model (or the model of your choice, piper engine recommended) and click Download:
en_US-amy-high (or amy-medium): Conversational, warm American voice.en_US-kristin-medium: Smooth, storytelling narrator tone.en_GB-cori-high: Polished British accent.
- Read Pasted Text Out Loud
- Go back to the main interface screen.
- Click the dropdown bar at the bottom left (it will currently say “No Text to Speech model”).
- Select the voice model you downloaded (e.g., Amy).
- Paste your text into the box.
- Click the Read button on the bottom right (the speaker icon) to speak the text out loud.
(Note: Do not click “Listen”—that button activates the microphone for Speech-to-Text, unless you want that).
