thumbtakModeratorWhat is Stoat?
Stoat (formerly known as Revolt Desktop) is a lightweight, open-source desktop client for the Revolt chat platform. Think of it as a privacy-focused, community-driven alternative to mainstream chat applications. It uses the same underlying technology as Discord or Slack but is built with a focus on user control and transparency.
Key Features of Stoat
- Privacy-Focused: Stoat and Revolt don’t sell your data or use telemetry.
- Lightweight: It’s designed to be fast and use minimal system resources.
- Customization: You can tweak themes, layout, and client-side CSS.
- Open Source: The code is available for anyone to audit or contribute to.
How to Install Stoat
Installation steps depend on which operating system you are using. I’ve broken this down for Windows, Linux, and macOS.
For Windows Users (Standard Installation)
This is the most common and recommended way to get Stoat running on Windows.
- Navigate to the official Stoat download page.
- Download the file ending in
.exe(e.g.,Stoat-Setup-1.0.0.exe). - Double-click the downloaded
.exefile to launch the installer. - Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation. Stoat will automatically launch when finished.
For Linux Users
Linux users have a few excellent options, depending on their preference and distribution.
Method 1: AppImage (Works on Most Distros)
This is the easiest “universal” method. An AppImage doesn’t need traditional installation; it runs as a standalone file.
- Download the
.AppImagefile from the Stoat download page. - Locate the downloaded file (usually in your
Downloadsfolder). - Right-click the AppImage, select Properties (or similar), and check the box that says “Allow executing file as program.“
- You can now launch Stoat by double-clicking the AppImage file.
Method 2: Snap Package
If your distribution supports Snap (it’s built into Xubuntu, Ubuntu, and Debian), this is a seamless way to install and stay updated.- Open your terminal.
- Run the following command:
$ sudo snap install stoat-tsugu(Note: The tsugu tag is often necessary for current builds).
For macOS Users (DMG Disk Image)
This is the standard installation method for macOS applications.
- Go to the Stoat download page.
- Download the file ending in
.dmg(e.g.,Stoat-1.0.0.dmg). - Locate and double-click the downloaded
.dmgfile to mount it. - A new window will open. Drag the Stoat icon onto the Applications folder shortcut.
- You can now eject the
.dmgfile and launch Stoat from your Applications folder.
